At NCS we recognize that God is the author of all truth. Therefore, we strive whenever possible to integrate God’s truth and His principles into all aspects of school life. We believe that the teacher is the most important part of the curriculum. As a school, we have mapped out our curriculum for each grade to insure we are meeting and exceeding the state standards. Teachers regularly participate in professional development opportunities to stay up to date on current educational research and the best teaching practices. Please schedule an appointment to talk with our Curriculum Director if you would like more detailed information about our curriculum.
Bible instruction is Christ-centered and evangelical. Classes include Bible reading, exploration, memorization of Bible verses, and stories. Classroom meetings encourage Christian growth and character development. Students participate in weekly age appropriate chapel services. Each class (1st-6th grades) takes a turn to plan and lead one chapel. Our curriculum for students in Kindergarten through 4th grade includes, Bible stories, character traits as modeled in the Bible, the life of Christ and the early church, and basic Christian teachings. In 5th grade students do a survey of the Old Testament. Our middle school students focus on the life of Christ, Christian apologetics and discipleship.
Saxon math is one of the most comprehensive programs available. The structure and lessons from Saxon are based upon traditional strategies and modern brain research proving its effectiveness. Last year, seventy-five percent of our graduates tested above 95% on their SAT.
Students learn the history of people and where they live from a Christian worldview. The students are taught to discern accurately how God and people have actually impacted this world. Students gain an understanding of the world, beginning with their family and community (in the lower grades) and expanding to the US and the world. Michigan history is taught in the 3rd grade.
Science should be experienced not just read about. Our hands-on science program allows students to do just that. Science becomes exciting as students participate in experiments with electricity, physics, biology and more. Whether students are putting together an electrical circuit, creating simple machines, testing pH, or launching a rocket, learning happens best when students are actively engaged in the subject.
Cursive writing instruction begins in 2nd grade. Zaner-Bloser method is used.
There are spelling rules to make a child successful. Parents are often confused over their child’s ability to retain spelling words. NCS has strategies that assist students to internalize proper spelling.
Our English program incorporates systematically taught grammar lessons which are applied in writing assignments. Word study and vocabulary are directly taught to enhance writing and speaking. Authentic editing using student’s coursework brings excitement and interest to this subject area.
NCS has one of the most effective reading programs in the state today. We teach individually, diagnostically and systematically so every child masters the art of reading. Children from both ends of the fluency continuum are excelling through our strategies in Sing, Spell, Read, and Write, Phonemic Awareness, and Orton-Gillingham.
